About Manque Design
The inspiration for Manque
"Manque" is a French word. It has several meanings (I am not going to pretend to understand
its grammatical usage) but the meaning I found when I first looked it up in a dictionary was "to fail".
When I tell people this, they reel in horror, "why on earth did you name your business to fail?" they ask.
Seven years later I still tell them the same thing "because if you are not prepared to fail you will
never try anything". It is this spirit that still informs everything that happens at Manque design.;
Nobody who works here is formally trained in what they do. Each of us, including myself, has simply
figured it out as we have gone along. We have followed our noses and our instincts and have run with opportunities as they have presented themselves. Manque has thus become a celebration of
the very spirit of creative adventure. Everybody here has permission to fail and make mistakes
and thus manages to make a truly original and inspired contribution to their particular role.
Every opportunity is taken to encourage our staff to find the best way for them to individually
achieve a result. We literally make it up as we go along. Not only are the clothes themselves an
ongoing creation of this attitude, but the business itself is constantly reshaped and remoulded as we
grow and learn together. This creates and exciting and nurturing environment in which each of us
is constantly learning and developing.
